Waist-to-height ratio

Divide your waist by your height. It is a simple way to check belly fat, which BMI does not see.

Quick answer

Keep your waist below half your height: a ratio under 0.5 is the healthy range for most adults. From 0.5 the health risk increases, and from 0.6 it is high.

How it works

Measure

Measure your waist halfway between your lowest rib and the top of your hip bone, after breathing out normally, without pulling the tape.

The ratio

Waist ÷ height, both in the same unit.

The ranges

Under 0.4: check with a professional · 0.4–0.49: healthy · 0.5–0.59: increased risk · 0.6 and above: high risk (NICE guidance, 2022).

FAQ

Why is it better than BMI?

BMI only uses weight and height, so it cannot tell muscle from fat. The waist-to-height ratio looks at belly fat, which is more closely linked to heart and metabolic health.

Does it work for everyone?

It is recommended for adults of all ethnic backgrounds. It is not meant for pregnant women or children under 18.

How do I lower my ratio?

Lose fat with a moderate calorie deficit, enough protein and regular strength training. The calorie calculator gives you a starting target.

General information, not medical advice. If you are pregnant, under 18 or have a medical condition, ask a health professional.
